Uk Brings Medicaid Dentistry To Region

Daniel Marsh DDS, left, and Dustin Hall DMD, right, provide dentistry services for patients at the University of Kentucky West Regional Clinic, 267 Slickback Road, Benton. This clinic is the closest Medicaid-approved clinic in the region.
Low income families that use the states Medicaid program can receive dental services nearby thanks to the opening of the University of Kentucky West Regional Clinic in Benton.
The clinic opened its doors on Aug. 1 and Office Manager Anne Matlock-Ethier said that families in the region, who had previously had to travel to Bowling Green for dental services, can receive the care their teeth need.
Matlock-Ethier said the dental clinic is not a free clinic, but they are a Medicaid-approved clinic. They accept private insurance as well. For services that Medicaid doesnt cover, she said the patient will be billed.
We originate because of the need. We provide all services except orthodontic, she said.
The services include cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, dentures, tooth extractions, to name a few.
According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services website, Medicaid covers oral exams, emergency visits, x-rays, extractions and fillings for adults and oral exams, emergency visits, x-rays, extractions, fillings, root canal therapy, crowns, sealants, denture repair for children.
The clinic has two dentists on staff and five chairs, she said.

Educating Patients Gets Complicated
The change is only affecting the Medicaid expansion population, and some groups like pregnant women, people deemed medically frail or caregivers will keep their automatic dental coverage, bypassing the My Rewards program. But dentists dont have access to information about which patients will be affected.
Dentist Garth Bobrowski said even though most of his patients have Medicaid coverage, he doesnt know who he has to educate about their changing benefits.
It doesnt just pop up: Youre Medicaid expansion! You dont know. Doctors just know you have X insurance, Bobrowski said.
With the waiver set to go into effect on July 1, dentists are going to have to start knowing why a patient has Medicaid. And advocates say outreach needs to start soon to let patients know how theyll get care going forward.
Family Health Centers Louisville spokeswoman Melissa Mather said itll take the efforts of the state, advocacy groups and providers to make sure people know how to earn those My Rewards dollars and keep their coverage. She said that means knowing which people need to earn dollars even before the patient makes an appointment.
We have to start looking at that because were going to educate people under this category in a different way, were going to start teaching you about how to accrue my rewards virtual dollars, Mather said. Before we could just say, you have Medicaid, great.
