Do You Have Very Low Income
To qualify for disability-based Medicaid, you must have countable income that is $1,133 per month or less .
For disability-based Medicaid eligibility, not all of your income is counted. The way your income is counted for disability-based Medicaid is very similar to SSIs countable income calculation:
- Most of your unearned income is counted.
- Important: SSI and NJ SNAP benefits are not counted for disability-based Medicaid eligibility.
This means that if you have a disability determination, you might be able to get a job and make $1,700 per month or more without losing your disability-based Medicaid, because more than half of your earned income wouldnt be counted.

Kids can meet NJ Family Care eligibility if the household income is at or below 350% of the Federal Poverty Level. Alternatively, there are two programs for kids who do not quite qualify for FamilyCare. Medicaid Special is for those under 21 whose household income is below 133% of the Federal Poverty Line but have aged out of Medicaid. The Trump Administration vowed to repeal the ACA and replace it, but that did not come to pass. There were several legislative efforts to repeal or change various aspects of the ACA in 2017, including bills that would have ended the enhanced federal funding for Medicaid expansion and switched general Medicaid funding to block grants or per-capita allotments, with an overall goal of sharply cutting federal Medicaid spending. But none of those bills passed. The only part of the ACA that was repealed was the individual mandate penalty.
