Who Should Consider These Facilities
Only women who have low risk pregnancies should consider birthing centers.
Again these facilities are not hospitals. If you are planning on having a c-section birth a birthing center isnt for you because theyre not equipped for that procedure.
Birthing centers are equipped with IVs, oxygen, medication, and even infant resuscitation equipment. Should there be in complications during labor these pieces of equipment can keep you and your baby safe while you are transported to a hospital for help.
As much comfort as a birthing center provides it should only be an option for you if you have a low risk pregnancy.

Our Midwives Focus On Your Strengths
Midwifery philosophy acknowledges pregnancy and birth as normal healthy events in a woman’s life. Midwives provide support and guidance in an atmosphere of trust. We encourage women to discover their strengths as they move through the important processes of pregnancy, birth, and early parenting.
The midwives of the Womens Specialists of Houston at Texas Childrens Pavilion for Women began our practice in 1994. We are committed to providing the highest level of health care honoring all women and their families.
The nurse midwives are certified by American Midwife Certification Board and fulfill state requirements as advanced practice nurses. Each nurse midwife has many years of midwifery experience.
The midwives have a well-established relationship of mutual respect with our physician colleagues. We work in collaboration and consultation with these physicians and attend births at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. Families are seen in the office Monday through Friday for both pregnancy and gynecological care. A nurse midwife is on call for labor and delivery 24 hours, seven days a week.

My Experience With Circumcision
Im a midwife and I have five sons. I never thought about circumcision much in the beginning, but Ive had a lot of experience with circumcision. Id like to share it with you.
When my first son was born in 1974, we stayed in the hospital for three days after the birth. On the third day, I remember we were anxious to go home, but we had to wait until Shay was circumcised. I dont remember anyone asking my permission and Im fairly sure I never signed any kind of permission slip. We all just assumed it would be done and it was. I did not see it done. They brought him back to me all wrapped up afterward. He wasnt crying It was kind of like he was in a state of shock, but he was ok. He had a plastibell, and I remember it was a relief when it came off about a week later.
My second son was born 10 years later. During that time, Id gone to nursing school and then worked as a nurse in Labor and Delivery and the newborn nursery. I had witnessed and cared for many babies that had had circumcisions. I was sure I did not want my baby to have one, but I still didnt worry about it too much beforehand.
Again we stayed in the hospital three days after his birth. On the second day, my husband and I had a discussion about circumcision. He felt very strongly that our son should be circumcised.
We know being a first-time mom can be a little overwhelming!

What Is A Birthing Center
A birthing center is a healthcare facility that specializes in childbirth.
Think of a birthing center as a home that can deliver your baby. Birthing centers offer a more cozy environment than a hospital labor ward. At the birthing centers mothers have more options like food, drinks, music, even having family and friends there for support.
Birth centers can also include queen size beds, birthing tubs, or showers for water births. At birthing centers mother are encouraged to be themselves by squatting, walking, or even shaking their groove thing to the Wobble to help the labor process along.
Birthing centers also have shorter stays than hospitals. A mother can deliver her child and both be back home only 6 hours after birth.

About The Doula Medicaid Project
The National Health Law Programs Doula Medicaid Project seeks to improve health outcomes for Medicaid enrollees by ensuring that all pregnant and postpartum people enrolled in Medicaid who want access to a doula will have one.
Low-income people in the United States are at a higher risk of poor birth outcomes, and pregnant and birthing people of color, especially Black pregnant and birthing people, are especially vulnerable. Doula care is among the most promising approaches to combating disparities in maternal health. Pregnant and birthing people receiving doula care have been found to have improved health outcomes for both themselves and their infants, including higher breastfeeding initiation rates, fewer low-birth weight babies, and lower rates of cesarean births. Doulas can also help reduce the impacts of racism and racial bias in health care on pregnant people of color by providing individually tailored, culturally appropriate, and patient-centered care and advocacy.
At NHeLP, we are lawyers, researchers, and policy advocates. We are not doulas. As such, we seek to do all our work in partnership with and with the guidance of community doula groups, doula collectives, and individual doulas, especially Black doulas and Black-led doula groups, as well as doulas and doula groups serving low-income clients.
To achieve the goal of Medicaid coverage of full spectrum doula care, we are engaged in advocacy work on various fronts, including:
