Things To Think About When Choosing A Medical Plan

Health Insurance Basics: How Do I Choose the Right Plan?

Choosing a medical plan is an important decision. Many people think first about cost and which doctors and hospitals are in the network. All PEBB medical plans, except for Premera Medicare Supplement Plans cover the same basic health care services but vary in other ways, such as provider networks, monthly plan costs, and prescription drug coverage. UnitedHealthcare PEBB Balance and UnitedHealthcare PEBB Complete include Medicare Part D coverage.

When selecting a PEBB medical plan, your options are limited based on eligibility and where you live. You must consider which plans are available in your county and whether you and any eligible dependents you wish to enroll are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. Remember, if you cover eligible dependents, everyone must enroll in the same medical and dental plans .

As you research your plan options, consider these questions:

How To Enroll In The Various Medicare Plans

There are three types of Medicare plans that all have different ways of signing up. Each of these plans also has different enrollment periods. If youâre new to Medicare, delaying your enrollment could result in various penalties and fees. Itâs helpful to set reminders for these important dates, especially when signing up for Medicare for the first time.

Plan
  • Go online and use the Medicare Plan Finder.
  • Contact the insurance company that offers the Part D plan directly.
  • It depends on how long you went without Part D

If You Are Choosing A Health Plan For The First Time:

To keep your primary care provider , choose a health plan your PCP is in. Use these questions to help you choose the best health plan for you:

    • Do you want to keep your current provider? Or do you want a new one?
    • Does the health plan have the providers, hospitals and specialists you use? To find out, go to Find a provider.
    • Does anyone in your family have special health needs?
    • What added services does the health plan have? To view each health plans added services, go to View health plans.

Do You Need Supplemental Medicare Coverage

As weve seen, Medicare comes with varying costs from premiums, deductibles, copayments, and so forth. You can get supplemental coverage to help cover these costs, and its known as Medigap.

Prescription drugs are expensive, even if youre just taking one drug and getting it filled every month.

Medigap comes in many different formsparts A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and Nthat help varying cover varying levels of copayments, coinsurance, extra hospital costs, pints of blood, deductibles, foreign travel insurance, and more.

The most popular Medigap plan is Part F, and its also the most expensive. Two-thirds of people who get a Medigap plan get Part F. Benefits included in this plan include :

    • Deductibles for parts A and B
    • Coinsurances for parts A and B
    • 80 percent of foreign travel insurance costs
    • Three pints of blood

There are premiums on these plans, and you will have to pay this monthly payment on top of your premiums for Part B and D. You may also have a yearly deductible you need to reach before your Medigap plan takes over payments.

Supplemental coverage is great for those who often need to use their Medicare services and may have high out-of-pocket costs due to Part A and B copayments and coinsurances.

    What It Will Cost You

    New Medicaid Plans

Nationwide, the average monthly premium for Medigap Plan G is $173 for a 65-year-old man and $156 for a 65-year-old woman, according to Weiss Ratings. High-deductible Plan G has a $2,490 deductible in 2022, and that premium averages about $54 a month for a 65-year-old man, and $49 a month for a 65-year-old woman. Premiums are based on three pricing systems and vary widely based on where you live.

    • Attained-age rated. This premium is initially based on your current age but can rise as you get older.
    • Community rated. The same monthly premium is charged to everyone who has this policy, regardless of age.
    • Issue-age rated. This premium is based on your age when you first buy the policy. The younger you are, the lower the initial premium. Any premium increases in the future will not be based on your age.

Experts suggest that you ask a potential insurer which pricing system it uses before buying a Medigap policy. That way youll know whether to expect increases as you age.

Do The Worst Case Scenario Math

Some employers offer software that allows workers to upload their claims history from the past year and uses that to recommend a health care plan. I wish that were available to everyone. The closest Ive seen is HealthSherpa, which helps people winnow their ACA marketplace options based on how they generally use health care.

The plan that may have been a good fit for your past claims, though, may not be the best choice for the future especially if you become seriously ill or injured. To protect against worst-case scenarios, you also need to consider the out-of-pocket limits. These are the maximum amounts youd have to pay in addition to your premiums. Out-of-pocket limits typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, although there may be different maximums for in-network versus out-of-network costs, and not all policies have these caps.

Some plans give you only a small break in premiums while exposing you to much larger potential costs, says Alan Silver, senior director of benefits delivery and administration at Willis Towers Watson, a benefits consultant.

Before signing up for any policy, add your annual premiums to the out-of-pocket limit to see the potential costs you could face. If the total scares you, look for a plan with a limit that lets you sleep at night.

    What Is Medicare Plan F

Historically, Medicare Plan F provided the most benefits of all the Medicare Supplement plans, says Price. It addresses some of the coverage gaps in Medicare Part A and Part B, which is why many people thought it was worth the extra premium, he notes.

The main benefit of Plan F, which sets it apart from other Medigap plans, is that it covers theMedicare Part B annual deductible.

Plan F was the best plan available, says Price. Thats why people were so interested in it. It was so popular, it was just automatically like, OK, Im signing up for Plan F. Im not going to look at anything else.

    Choose Original Or Advantage

For new enrollees, this is the big first decision. Original Medicare comprises two parts: Medicare Part A, which provides coverage for most costs related to hospital stays, and Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, lab work, outpatient services and preventive care.

Part A is free to most people who qualify for Medicare. You need to pay for Part B the standard premium this year is about $134 a month, or $109 a month for most people who have their premium deducted from their Social Security checks. However, the premium rate is higher if your income is above a certain threshold. There are deductibles and copays involved with both parts.

Over the years, as private insurers started to offer health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations , Congress decided that Medicare recipients should have this option as well. So in 1997 it created Medicare Part C, or what is known today as Medicare Advantage plans. In these plans, you get Part A and Part B coverage from private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Unlike original Medicare, the plans use a network of health care providers you may be able to see a doctor out of network, but at a higher cost. Some plans charge a monthly premium above the usual Part B premium, and there are potential copays and deductibles, too. These vary according to the plan you choose.

Are There Any Drawbacks To Medicare Easy Pay

Do I need to choose a Medicaid Health Plan (North Carolina)

Not really. However, as with any automatic bill pay, you need to make sure you have enough money to cover each withdrawal to avoid potential overdraft fees. Also, starting, stopping, or changing Medicare Easy Pay can take up to eight weeks.

In addition, you cannot use Medicare Easy Pay to pay monthly premiums for Medicare products offered by private insurance companies, nor can you use it to pay for Medicare Part D premiums, so you still need to keep track of these deadlines and payments separately.
