The National Provider Identifier is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Administrative Simplification Standard. The NPI is a unique identification number for covered health care providers. Covered health care providers and all health plans and health care clearinghouses must use the NPIs in the administrative and financial transactions adopted under HIPAA. The NPI is a 10-position, intelligence-free numeric identifier . This means that the numbers do not carry other information about healthcare providers, such as the state in which they live or their medical specialty. The NPI must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers in the HIPAA standards transactions.

As outlined in the Federal Regulation, The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 , covered providers must also share their NPI with other providers, health plans, clearinghouses, and any entity that may need it for billing purposes.

This is a reminder, Episodes of Care Performance Reports are posted on the MITS Portal under the Report tab for Hospitals, Physicians, Group Providers, Clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers. These reports show your cost of care per Episode, how your costs compare to your peers and should be shared with your Organizations Leadership including your Medical Director/Quality Management. Reporting An Npi To The Ihcp

Healthcare service providers must have their NPI on file with the IHCP. Provider enrollment applications submitted to the IHCP must include the proper NPI type, based on the organizational structure of the enrolling individual or entity. Alignment of the NPI type, organizational structure, legal name, and tax identification number are required and verified as follows:

Healthcare service providers must use their NPI on claims to identify the rendering and billing provider. Nonhealthcare providers – also known as atypical providers – must use their IHCP Provider IDs on claims. A provider’s claims submitted without an NPI will be rejected. For submissions and communication other than claims, all providers should use their IHCP Provider ID as their unique identifier.

    The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 requires the adoption of a standard unique identifier for health care providers. The NPI Final Rule issued January 23, 2004, adopted the NPI as this standard. The following resources will help you understand and deal with the NPI and its impact on Arkansas Medicaid.

    NPI Numbers and Electronic Transactions

    Arkansas Medicaid will only accept the National Provider Identifier number anywhere a provider number is required on electronic transactions. Some examples would be the billing, performing, requesting, attending, referring and prescribing provider number as appropriate for the transaction submitted. The NPI must also be used on electronic eligibility verification transactions.

    Enrolled providers must report their NPI to Arkansas Medicaid. In order to report your NPI, log on the Health Care Provider Portal by entering your user ID and password. Proceed by following the steps to report your NPI. If you have already reported your NPI number to Arkansas Medicaid, your NPI information has been successfully linked to your Arkansas Medicaid Provider number.

    A Medicare/Medicaid Provider Number verifies that a provider has been Medicare certified and establishes the type of care the provider can perform. This identifier is a six-digit number. The first two digits specify the state in which the provider is located, and the last four digits indicate the type of facility. For Ambulatory Surgery Centers, the MPN is 10 digits with the first two digits representing the state where the surgery center is located.
