Residential Vs Outpatient Treatment
As a patient receiving treatment at any treatment facility in New York, you can either get residential or outpatient care.
The type of treatment you need will depend on the severity of the illness and a host of other factors. Usually, it is the job of a trained psychiatrist or counselor to determine which is the best treatment option.
In a residential, inpatient treatment setting, you will receive your care in the hospital. You will be housed in a comfortable environment where you will not be disturbed. Also, the system allows doctors and other members of the care team to monitor and observe you closely all-day long.
Out-patient treatment is used for less mild cases. Patients considered for outpatient treatment are usually more stable and are generally will not cause harm to themselves or others around them.

Expanded Medicaid Coverage In New York Mental Health Services
In December, 2021, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed two new bills into law which will greatly expand coverage under the States Medicaid program.
The first new law, which will take effect on March 21, 2022, will amend the New York Social Services Law to provide that the care and services provided in New York by licensed clinical social workers will be eligible for coverage under the Medicaid program. Once the law is effective, licensed clinical social workers will be able to bill Medicaid directly for their services within their scope of practice. Licensed clinical social workers in New York have a broad scope of practice in the State and are authorized to practice mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, creative arts therapy, and psychoanalysis. As a result, this new law should assist in greatly broadening access for individuals to critical mental health services across the State especially at this critical time when so many individuals have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reminder: Medicaid Enrollment Requirements And Compliance Deadlines For Managed Care Providers
As previously stated in the April 2022 Medicaid Update article titled Medicaid Enrollment Requirements and Compliance Deadlines for Managed Care Providers, all Medicaid Managed Care network furnishing, ordering, prescribing, referring and attending providers must be enrolled with New York State Medicaid program. Effective September 1, 2022, MMC Plans will deny payment to unenrolled pharmacies, other unenrolled practitioners, and providers for services provided and/or prescribed. Providers servicing MMC members should, without delay, begin the enrollment process and complete all required forms, including certifications.
Please note: The enrollment requirement is applicable only to enrollable provider types including pharmacies and most licensed practitioners. Non-enrollable provider types must not be terminated from MMC networks for failure to enroll in NYS Medicaid. Providers can refer to the NYS Enrollable Providers list, which is available through Excel.
When Should You Go To A State Mental Health Program
Public mental health providers are usually the best option when youre having a mental health crisis and need help right away. Theyre also generally good options when you have severe, complex, or multiple conditions that require specialized or coordinated care. For example, public programs often have integrated programs for people with dually-diagnosed mental health and substance use disorders. Evidence shows that these programs are the most effective way to treat co-occurring conditions, but they can be hard to find in the private sector.
In some cases, public mental health programs only accept people with severe conditions or people who are at risk of psychiatric hospitalization. However, due to the diversity of programs licensed by the Office of Mental Health , this isnt as true in New York. If youre looking for free or low-cost counseling, public clinics and counseling programs may be a good choice where you live. Again, the best way to find out if an OMH program is the right match for you is to call and ask. If you find out your local program isnt a good fit, you can search for free or low-cost private practice counselors on OpenCounseling.com.
