Eastern Kentucky University and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Medicaid in Kentucky today announced the expansion of the Anthem Medicaid Rural Scholarship to grow the number of frontline workers in the eastern region of the state and increase access to care and improve health equity for those living in Kentuckys rural areas.
The scholarship fund of nearly $200,000 to EKUs health science program will enable more students to provide care in underserved communities. Anthem Medicaid launched the scholarship in August 2021, granting eight students the opportunity to pursue health education and eventually serve in eastern Kentucky.
Building relationships and trust is such a large part of health care, said Dr. David McFaddin, Eastern Kentucky University President. From relationships like the incredible one weve formed with Anthem Medicaid, to the relationship health care providers form with their patients, these connections are especially important. Students at EKU understand the communities in which they work, and this education will help them provide family, friends and neighbors with the best care possible.
Compared to those in urban areas, thousands of rural Kentuckians lack access to locally available health care professionals and services, and face longer travel times to reach a hospital or health care facility.
Currently, Anthem Medicaid serves more than 178,285 individuals in the Commonwealth, including 42% of individuals who live in rural areas.
Anthem Kentucky Medicaid And Coalition For The Homeless Launch The Community Table Series
The Coalition for the Homeless and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Medicaid in Kentucky have partnered to launch The Community Table, a free lunchtime series designed for professionals working with communities experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. These virtual events will convene professionals, clinicians, community partners, and experts to explore and discuss a range of issues facing social service agencies, their staff, and the people they serve.
Many of our social workers have been central in providing care throughout the pandemic, and they didnt have the luxury of working remotely or staying home, said Natalie Harris, Executive Director of Coalition for the Homeless. Thats why we are partnering with Anthem Medicaid to host The Community Table and equip these workers with the much-needed resources, tools and skills to mitigate stress and to continue providing high-quality care for their clients.

Mama To Mama The Birth Haven And Hopes Embrace Partner With Anthem Kentucky Medicaid On Initiative To Expand Maternal Health Services In Kentucky
Three nonprofits from Lexington and Louisville teamed up with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Kentucky Medicaid to expand maternal health services and improve health outcomes for expecting mothers and newborns. The exciting announcement comes on the heels of Governor Andy Beshear declaring May as Doula Awareness Month in Kentucky.
Through its Maternity Options Made Simple grant, Anthem is donating $75,000 to both The Birth Haven and Hopes Embrace, two Central Kentucky nonprofits offering parents and caregivers the much-needed tools and skills to thrive during childbirth and parenting. In addition, Anthem is pledging $150,000 to Mama to Mama in Louisville, totaling $300,000 in dedicated funding for maternal health services.
In recognizing Doula Awareness Month, Gov. Beshear proclaimed, Doula services have been proven to lower the overall cost of giving birth, providing far-reaching positive impacts on Kentucky families, the economy and the entire Commonwealth. Organizations like Mama to Mama, Hopes Embrace and The Birth Haven are working in partnership to expand access and resources to critical maternal and infant health services including exponentially increasing the number of doulas.
In fact, the maternal mortality rate per 100,000 live births for Black women in Fayette and Jefferson counties is over two and half times higher than for white women: 42.1 vs. 17.2 respectively.

Anthems Medicare plan members will be able to choose health and wellness services that address drivers of health
LEXINGTON, Ky.—-Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky announced today expanded access to health and wellness services offered through many of its 2022 Medicare Advantage plans. Members will be able to choose from a package of up to nine benefits, which may include benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing flex card healthy food and in-home support. These services aim to address drivers of health, such as food insecurity, home safety, and social isolation.
These enhanced and new benefits are part of Anthems approach of addressing whole health and its many drivers of health, helping our members be more proactive in their health, said Neil Steffens, President of Anthems Medicare Central Region. We are committed to giving Medicare-eligible individuals access to innovative products and services that make it easier for them to improve their health and wellbeing.

This can result in gaps in care, deteriorating oral health and the risk of future health complications, so we want our members to take control of their health by accessing the benefits offered through DentaQuest. Children should start seeing a dentist when they get their first tooth, before their first birthday, and both children and adults should see a dentist every six months, said Rebekah Mathews, DentaQuest regional director of client engagement in Kentucky. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in Kentucky, and children with dental problems typically grow up to become adults with dental problems. As we grow older, dental issues can lead to more severe health issues, so it is important to start practicing preventive health as soon as possible and working toward a healthier future.

BOWLING GREEN, KY. Western Kentucky University and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Medicaid in Kentucky today announced an endowed scholarship to expand the number of frontline workers in the western region of the state, increase access to care and improve health equity in Kentuckys rural areas. The Anthem Medicaid Rural Medicine Scholarship will support up to four students at WKU through a $100,000 gift from Anthem Medicaid that will serve students for years to come.
According to a 2022 Kentucky Hospital Association report, 22% of all nursing jobs in the state are unfilled, and another 14% of nurses are near retirement. In 2021 alone, Kentucky hospitals reported more than 13,000 vacancies. Shortages such as this, coupled with the states high prevalence of multiple chronic conditions, reinforce the need to expand the number of health care professionals in the Commonwealth.
