Physicians Far Less Likely To Take New Medicaid Patients Cdc Finds

The data confirm what Medicaid beneficiaries report and what a study by a Wharton School professor found: physicians’ willingness to take on Medicaid patients is directly related to reimbursement rates.

Data released by CDC confirm reports heard from around the country: physicians are less likely to accept new patients covered by Medicaid. In this case, the data come from the doctors themselves.

A QuickStats update included in this weeks Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report shows that overall, 88.9% of primary care physicians said they are accepting new patients, based on 2015 data from the National Electronic Health Records Survey. However, the survey found there are differences in acceptance rates based on the patient’s expected form of payment:

  • 94.2% of physicians accepted patients with private insurance
  • 77.4% of physicians accepted patients with Medicare
  • 71.6% of physicians accepted patients with Medicaid

In 2015, the year the data were collected, CMS reported that Medicaid covered 70.5 million Americans. The sudden surge in Americans with Medicaid due to Affordable Care Act had made it difficult for many to find a primary care doctor, in large part because reimbursements in the program had been historically low. A 2014 article in the New England Journal of Medicine said while there are several reasons why Medicaid beneficiaries have a hard time finding a primary care doctor, low or slow payments are the main ones.

About 69% Of Doctors Accept Medicaid Patients

N.J. doctors least likely to accept new Medicaid patients, survey says ...

Physicians have been accepting a smaller percentage of new Medicaid patients than patients on Medicare or with private insurance, according to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics , part of the Centers for Disease Control.

More than 95% of office-based physicians were accepting new patients in 2013, the latest for which data are available. While nearly 85% accepted patients using private insurance, and almost 84% accepted those in Medicare, less than 69% were accepting Medicaid recipients.

The study noted that the Affordable Care Act calls for Medicaid payment rates for many primary care services to equal those paid by Medicare, but most states have not fully implemented the new payment rates.

The NCHS looked at the acceptance of new patients by doctors in cities and smaller communities. There was almost no difference for patients with private insurance. About 83% of doctors in metropolitan areas accepted Medicare patients, compared to over 91% in non-metro areas. For Medicaid patients, the acceptance rate was 67% in cities, versus almost 86% in smaller communities.

The five states with the lowest percentage of physicians who accepted Medicaid patients were California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey and New York.

The survey data was drawn from electronic records of 4,220 physicians nationwide between February and June of 2013.

Does Medicare Cover A Primary Care Physician Near Me

If you have Original Medicare , Medicare Part B generally covers medically necessary services and tests you get in a doctor office including visits to your primary care physician. You generally pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount, except for certain preventive services. Because this amount is a coinsurance you wont know the actual costs until you receive the bill.

If you have Medicare Advantage, you may pay a copayment for a primary care doctor visit. A copayment is a set dollar amount, for example $10, that you pay for an office visit for a primary care doctor. A benefit of Medicare Advantage is knowing in advance what you will typically pay for a doctor visit.

Do Most Doctors Accept Medicaid As An Insurance Provider

Many physicians do not want to get paid via Medicaid because the amounts and rates are lower than, say, Medicare or private insurance. Meanwhile, the overhead relative to processing those claims does not change. Thus, fewer professionals will accept this coverage than accept Medicare.

Doctors who accept Medicaid might often be newer to private practice, and seeking to build up a large pool of patients. Even among those doctors who accept Medicaid, there is some evidence that those patients receive a lower priority by medical office staff. In addition, many Medicaid-friendly clinicians, while fully licensed by their states, lack board certification in their specialty.

Medicare & Medicaid Doctor Directory

By | Submitted On March 31, 2008

If you are receiving Medicare and/or Medicaid, it can often be difficult to find a doctor, be it a general practitioner or specialist, who will accept your insurance. Unfortunately the payment schedules set up by the government have resulted in many doctors opting out of the system because they simply cannot afford the substantially lower payments for Medicaid/Medicare services as well as afford to pay for the substantially greater paperwork involved in taking such patients.

Sadly, government has had a tendency to reduce reimbursement payments, not increase them, and do not seem to be interested in covering the actual cost of providing services.

Not only that, but private insurers are not longer willing to “subsidize” public patients by paying higher rates, so doctors cannot shift the ever-increasing costs to them.

As a result, at a time when more and more doctors are opting out of the system, those doctors who still take Medicare and Medicaid patients generally limit the number they will serve, so finding a doctor who will take your Medicare or Medicaid insurance is not as easy as simply opening the phone book and making a phone call. Indeed, it probably will take some real time and effort on your part.

So, how do you find a doctor that will take new Medicare/Medicaid patients?

Can You Make An Emergency Appointment After Hours Without Needing To Pay Higher Costs

A medical appointment is a key aspect in how to find a doctor accepting new patients. People wishing to ask about scheduled local physical therapy appointments outside the standard 9 am-5 pm work weekday may want to see if their doctor offers appointments after hours, i.e., 7 pm, 8 pm.

Those wishing to ask about scheduled appointments outside of the standard 9 am-5 pm work weekday should consider asking where they would need to go if they needed immediate attention for a medical concern that cannot wait until business hours resume three days later.
