What If I Am Not A U S Citizen

Activating a NYS Medicaid card for P-EBT food benefits

To be eligible for Medicaid in Louisiana, you must be resident of Louisiana and either U.S. citizen or a non-citizen who is lawfully present in the U.S. Non-citizens can qualify for coverage for emergencies and labor and delivery services if income requirements are met.Medicaid and LaCHIP coverage may be available to children up to age 19 who are lawfully residing and are otherwise eligible.

Card Security And Redundancy

It is always wise to make photocopies of these cards and to keep them in safe locations. This way, you have the information on hand in case your card is lost or stolen.

You will still want to order a replacement card, but the photocopy can come in handy until a new one is obtained. Some people take pictures of their cards and store them on their phones and computers. This makes the cards susceptible to theft though, and Medicaid fraud runs rampant in this country.

Where Can I Find Information About A Nursing Home’s Health Or Fire

Health and fire-safety inspections with detailed and summary information about deficiencies found during the three most recent comprehensive inspections and the last three years of complaint investigations are found on the Medicare.gov Nursing Home Compare website.

For information about Louisiana nursing homes or any other nursing home inquiry, contact the LDH Health Standards Section, Nursing Home Program Desk at 225-342-0114 or visit the Louisiana Nursing Home Association website. Nursing home providers are required to post the results of their most recent inspection in the facility.

When To Contact Your State Medicaid Or Chip Agency

Issues to take to your state Medicaid or CHIP agency include:

  • You didnt get an enrollment card and arent sure youre covered
  • You cant find a doctor who accepts Medicaid or CHIP, or you cant get an appointment
  • You want to know if a service or product is covered
  • You have a life change that may affect if youre eligible for Medicaid or CHIP like getting a job that increases your income, your dependent reaching an age where they no longer qualify, or getting married or divorced.

FILLING PRESCRIPTIONS IF YOU DON’T HAVE A CARD: If you need to fill a prescription and havent received your enrollment card yet, check if your pharmacy accepts Medicaid, CHIP, or your health plan. If they do, take your eligibility letter and prescription to the pharmacy. Theyll try to fill it using the information in the letter.

If they dont have enough information, most pharmacies can give you enough medicine for 3 days. Call your Medicaid or CHIP agency or health plan for help getting the rest of your medicine.

If your pharmacy doesnt accept Medicaid, CHIP, or your health plan, call the number in your eligibility letter to find a pharmacy you can use. You can usually find this information on the state Medicaid or CHIP agency website too.

Send your inquiry by email, fax or postal mail. Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, date of birth and Social Security number. If sending your inquiry by email or fax, you may wish to only include the last four digits of your Social Security number as these communication methods tend to be less secure than others. Some state agencies, such as Indiana and Connecticut, also accept inquiries through their website.

How Do You Check If Your Medicaid Is Active

If you need to check the status of your Medicaid coverage, contact your local or state Medicaid office. The number on the back of your Medicaid card is usually the same as the number on the back of your Medicare card. If you do not have your card, you can use the number provided in Step 2 to verify your Medicaid status if you do not have one.

Why Its Important To Replace Your Medicaid Card

Your Medicaid card has a serial number on it that is used as a billing ID number for health care providers. You will typically need to show your Medicaid card at doctors offices, pharmacies and other places where seeking services or items covered by Medicaid.

Your Medicaid card may be photocopied or scanned, or your Medicaid number may be recorded so that Medicaid can issue the proper reimbursement to the provider of your care.

    Missed Or Canceled Appointments

When members do not show up for a scheduled appointment, it creates an unused appointment slot that could have been used for another member. It is very important to keep appointments and call the provider in advance if you cannot make it to a scheduled appointment. Medicaid providers cannot bill a member for no-show/missed appointments. However, a provider may discharge a member from their practice after so many no-show/missed appointments. The provider must have the same policy for Medicaid members as non-Medicaid members, and must notify Medicaid members that the policy exists.

What Do I Do With Medical Bills

The Medicare Common Access Card Explained

Pay attention to the mail you get for medical care. If the bill says that you owe money, you should:

  • Make sure your providers office has a copy of your Medicaid card for the month of the service.
  • If they have billed for the services but have not heard back from the health plan or Medicaid, ask if they will check on the claim. You can also call and check on the claim.
  • If you have called your providers office and checked on the claim but you still have problems, call an HPR.
  • You may have to pay your own medical bills for Medicaid covered services if:

    • You see a provider who is not part of your health plan
    • You receive services without showing your Medicaid Member Card to the provider

You will have to pay the bill for services you get:

    • When you were not eligible for Medicaid
    • During an appeal, grievance or hearing if the action is denied
    • If the services you receive are not covered by Medicaid

If you get services that Medicaid does not cover, you have to pay for the services yourself. You should sign a form that says:

  • What non-covered service you will have.
  • You know it is not a Medicaid covered service.
  • How much you will have to pay.
  • If you receive about a bill from a medical provider, you talk to the provider about the bill, and you still have a question, call Medicaid Information at 801-538-6155 or toll-free at 1-800-662-9651.

    Medicaid Beneficiaries

Many people get their Medicaid benefits directly from their states Medicaid program. Some states, however, funnel benefits through a third-party insurance company that operates in the state. The benefits you get this way usually function just like the benefits youd have through legacy Medicaid, though you probably have access to that insurers full network of providers, whether its an HMO or a PPO.

These cards are just like your Medicaid card, since they function the same way at payment and have some personal information on them. As with your Medicaid card, you want to keep track of where your HMO or PPO card is at all times.
