Yes, we do! We are proud to be a provider of the Smiles for Children program through the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services. Smiles for Children covers diagnostic, preventative, restorative, and surgical dental procedures for Medicaid, FAMIS, and FAMIS Plus children up to age 21, as well as orthodontia services. The program also provides limited coverage for adults ages 21 and up, providing coverage for some medically necessary oral surgery services.
Enrollment in this program is automatic for any child covered by VA Medicaid, FAMIS, or FAMIS Plus. There is no special enrollment process or a separate dental coverage card. There are no out-of-pocket costs for your child’s covered dental treatments through the Smiles for Children program.
This program covers a wide range of services in addition to exams and cleanings, including flouride treatments, sealants, extractions, anesthesia, crowns, root canals, x-rays, fillings, and oral disease services.
Coverage for adults over 21 years of age is extremely limited and includes extraction of teeth for severe abscesses that may complicate a medical condition or contribute to poor general health, as well as coverage of non-dental oral surgeries for birth defects, removal of cysts and tumors not related to your teeth, biopsies for possible malignancies within the mouth, and repair of traumatic wounds.

Virginia Is Offering Dental Benefits To All Adults On Medicaid For The First Time
RICHMOND, Va. For the first time, thousands of low-income adults on Medicaid in Virginia are eligible for comprehensive dental benefits.
The new policy officially took effect on July 1, 2021.
The Virginia General Assembly initially allocated funding for the expansion in the 2020 session but the change was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since it was authorized in the two-year state budget, lawmakers will have to allocate more funding in the future to maintain this level of coverage.
However, advocates believe this is the start of a permanent shift.
Once youve enabled access to comprehensive healthcare its pretty difficult to suddenly not prioritize that care, said Virginia Health Catalyst CEO Sarah Holland. This is a game changer.
Holland has been pushing for the expansion for at least a decade. She said Virginia is the 20th state to take this step.
Several years ago this was seen as a luxury, Holland said. But people die of dental disease all of the time. Often it is coded as something else.
Dr. Tegwyn Brickhouse, chair of VCUs Department of Dental Public Health and Policy, explained oral health is inseparable from overall health.
It can help control chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We also know theres a link between oral health and pre-term birth, Brickhouse said.
Those looking to make an appointment should identify themselves as a Medicaid recipient and make sure the practice accepts Medicaid before booking.

Dental treatment for adults is covered under certain circumstances through Virginia’s dental program, Smiles For Children.
Adult dental services are limited to medically necessary oral surgery and associated diagnostic services, such as X-rays and surgical extractions.
Preventive, restorative, endodontics, and prosthetic services are not covered for adults. Dental conditions that may qualify for reimbursement are ones compromising a patient’s general health and such conditions must be documented by the dentist or medical provider.
