But you are responsible for the entire COBRA premium, both what you paid and what your employee paid, prior to your retirement, plus a 2% surcharge by the insurance company for its administrative costs.

Depending on what your options are and what you choose to do, the interplay among private insurance, Medicare and COBRA are integral. For example, an employee retires and waives COBRA in favor of a retiree health plan covering him and his family. But you cant have both that retiree health plan and Medicare at the same time. When he qualifies for Medicare, he loses the retiree plan but must be offered COBRA from the date of his Medicare qualification to at least 18 months forward. Employees should consult with their company benefits administrators for more information.1

Upcoming Changes To Dental Services In Florida Medicaid

In 2016, the Florida Legislature directed the Agency for Health Care Administration to enroll most Medicaid recipients into dental plans. Recipients will receive a dental plan based on the below schedule. The schedule is separated into phases by the recipients county location.

How Does It Work

Supplementary health and dental insurance policies are contracts between you and an insurance company. You agree to pay a yearly or monthly fee called a premium, and the company agrees to pay the benefits which are covered under your policy. Your policy will outline what is included and what is not.

  • You may also have dollar or percentage limits, or maximums placed on the amount of benefits that you can receive. Maximums can apply to specific health benefits like eyeglasses or massage therapy sessions in a specified period typically a year, or during your lifetime.

How To Find Low

So, what do you do if you don’t qualify for Medicaid, or your Medicare doesn’t cover your dental, but you can’t afford a private plan or to pay out-of-pocket for dental care?

People who don’t qualify for Medicaid normally don’t qualify for one of the following reasons:

  • Income is considered too high
  • Their state didn’t expand Medicaid under the ACA
  • They aren’t legal citizens of the United States

If you find yourself in one of these categories, there are still ways to access low-income dental care, and find a dentist that provides low-income care.

Do You Need Supplementary Health Or Dental Insurance

If you are young and healthy, you might not need to buy supplementary health or dental coverage. It depends to an extent on what you are covered for under OHIP, a group plan or a parents group plan. For example, starting in January 2018, OHIP provides prescription drug coverage to youth 24 and under who are not covered by private benefits. Those children and youth are able to get more than 4,400 prescription medicines for free by showing their health card and prescription. Coverage is automatic, with no up-front costs. Dental benefits are available for adult SoonerCare members served through the In-Home Supports Waiver or Community Waiver. Adults with developmental disabilities served in these waivers are evaluated by their case managers for initial services such as a general exam, cleaning and x-rays. Requests for additional treatment may now be directed to the case manager to include up to $1,000 per plan of care in services.

All services must be prior authorized by the members case manager. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services has prepared information packets about the benefits to distribute to interested dental providers. Congress Should Ensure That All Medicare And Medicaid Enrollees Have Access To Dental Vision And Hearing Benefits

If Congress considers legislation to expand coverage for dental, vision, and hearing benefits in Medicare as it should it should also require states to offer these critical services to low-income non-elderly adults with Medicaid coverage. Failing to do so would leave out a group even more likely to have unmet needs for dental care due to cost than Medicare enrollees.

Dental Coverage During Pregnancy

Many Medicaid programs have taken steps to make it easier for pregnant women to access dental services under Medicaid. This is because oral health problems can result in lower birth weights and preterm births.

This may mean that your state covers an expanded set of dental services for Medicaid enrollees who are pregnant. For example, Michigan’s Medicaid program only offers limited dental benefits for the general population of adults, but those who are pregnant have extensive coverage.

If you’re pregnant, it’s also usually easier to qualify for Medicaid and its dental benefits. For example, California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, is typically only available for those who earn up to 138% of the federal poverty level, which is a limit of $18,755 per year for an individual. However, those who are pregnant can qualify for Medi-Cal and its dental benefits with an income of up to $28,947 per year for an individual, which is 213% of the federal poverty level.

Do I Enroll In Medicare If My Spouse Has Retiree Coverage

Yes. You can delay signing up for Medicare only if you or your spouse has coverage from a current employer. You need to enroll in Medicare no later than eight months after your spouse stops working or you may have to pay a lifetime late-enrollment penalty when you do enroll in Part B.

That is also the case if your spouse continues his or her employers coverage through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 , a federal law that requires organizations with 20 or more employees to offer health insurance for up to 18 months after workers leave their job. COBRA doesnt count as active employment, so you must enroll in Medicare during your initial enrollment period to avoid late-enrollment penalties.
