Are Hearing Aids Covered By Medicare

Florida Hearing Healthcare Information

Medicare doesnt provide coverage for hearing aids, hearing exams, or exams where the patient is fitted for hearing aids. This means that the beneficiary is responsible for 100% of these costs.

If your provider orders diagnostic hearing and balance exams, theyll be covered by Part B. When a hearing problem is discovered, Medicare wont pay for hearing aids, hearing exams, or exams for hearing aid fittings.

When Congress established Medicare in 1965, it excluded hearing aids from coverage, noting that they were routinely needed and low in cost.

Further, Medigap plans cover the 20% that Original Medicare leaves uncovered. Because Medicare doesnt cover hearing aids and related exams, a Medigap plan also wont help cover them.

However, Medicare Advantage plans often include hearing plans as part of their benefits.

Does Medicare Pay For Hearing Aids Hearing Exams Or Balance Exams

Medicare will pay for diagnostic hearing and balance exams only if your health care provider orders it to see if you need medical treatment.

Your Medicare Part B is what covers the diagnostic hearing and balance exams, so if youâre enrolled in Original Medicare, you have this benefit.

In many audiology practices, a diagnostic hearing and balance exam can cost upwards of $100, so itâs quite nice that Medicare picks up the cost as long as your doctor orders it.

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover hearing aids, hearing exams, or exams for fitting hearing aids. You do pay 100% for hearing exams and hearing aids, and this is where the real expenses come in.

A good set of hearing aids can often cost around $5,000. If you see an audiologist at a family-owned practice, youâre more likely to be met with payment options, such as being able to pay half up front and the other half after a couple months.

If financing is a real concern for you, always ask if there is any flexibility before denying yourself the gift of better hearing.

If your state does not offer Medicaid coverage for hearing aids, there are other options available that can help make these devices more affordable. Weve listed a few below.

  • Medicare Advantage: Though Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids, some Medicare Advantage plans include hearing care services that cover the cost of hearing aids and other benefits, like working with an audiologist.
  • Veterans Benefits: The Veterans Health Administration offers audiology benefits, including access to a professional audiologist to assist with individualized diagnosis and treatment options. VHA Audiology has access to some of the most modern hearing aid technologies available.
  • Other Organizations: There are many national and local organizations that provide financial assistance for hearing aids, such as Let Them Hear Foundation, Miracle-Ear Foundation and Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. These organizations will assess your situation to determine the financial benefits they will offer, and some will provide a loan program to assist you with paying for your hearing aids over time.

The Medicaid States With No Hearing Aid Coverage

All remaining states not listed above did not have hearing aid coverage as of 2021. Since new laws are constantly being enacted, you should double-check to see if this has changed. Google your state as described above or call your Medicaid customer service line directly to ask if they cover hearing aids or auditory services.

Suppose your state does not offer hearing aid coverage. In that case, you can look for additional assistance through the Hearing Loss Association of America or the Hearing Aid Project.

What Is The Cost Of Untreated Hearing Loss

The cost of hearing aids may seem very expensive, but it is also important to recognize the cost of untreated hearing loss. According to a study published in the Hearing Review in 2019, untreated hearing loss costs the United States 133 billion dollars per year. Per individual, this amounts to $9,100 per person with hearing loss.

Not only are there monetary costs, but also negative personal effects from hearing loss. According to ASHA, hearing loss has been linked to feelings of depression, anxiety, frustration, social isolation, and fatigue.

Studies show that these effects can be helped by wearing hearing aids. Therefore, hearing aids can be a life-changing investment.

What Hearing Aid Services Are Covered By Medicare

If your doctor believes you have a medical condition requiring treatment that can be diagnosed with a balance test or diagnostic hearing exam, Part B may cover 80% of allowable charges for these tests . If you get these tests as an outpatient at the hospital, the hospital copayment may also apply.

Under Original Medicare, you usually pay 100% of the costs associated with routine hearing exams and hearing aids.

What Kind Of Hearing Aids Does Medicaid Cover

When you check that your state pays some or all of the price of hearing aids, you may ask what is truly covered.

Again, this varies by state, but in most circumstances, you are insured for:

  • Hearing exams
  • Repairs
  • Replacements

This implies that you will be covered as long as the hearing aid is deemed medically essential. However, there are two kinds of hearing aids to consider:

  • Monaural Hearing Aid As the name implies, the Mono denotes that just one ear is affected and therefore only one hearing aid is required. Although this can be a beneficial option for many individuals and enhance their quality of life, there have been situations when the hearing in the other ear has been lost due to the monaural hearing aid.
  • Binaural Hearing Aids These hearing aids relate to the reception of sound in both ears. It is currently standard practice to have patients use binaural hearing aids from the outset since this has been demonstrated to have the greatest long-term benefits.

Depending on where you reside, both medical aids may be covered.

Why Dont Insurance Companies Provide Coverage

Insurance companies will say that hearing aids are elective, and therefore are not a covered benefit, much like elective surgery would not be covered.

However, a more likely reason is that, according to statistics, a large number of people will eventually experience hearing loss. One in three adults between the ages of 65 and 74 experiences some degree of hearing loss, while half of people over 75 have age-related hearing loss. Add to this the number of younger people with noise-induced hearing loss and genetic conditions leading to deafness, and insurance companies would be paying out more money than they collect in premiums. For these reasons, it is not likely that insurance companies will offer coverage any time soon.

How To Know If You Need A Hearing Aid

Although most hearing problems affect older people, there have been several cases of deficiencies with young adults, and in some cases, children.

The major problem when you need a hearing aid is that you may not immediately know you need one! It is a problem that graduates naturally. But there are signs that you need to observe to know if you should see an audiologist about your ears.

Signs such as hearing a ringing sound in the ears, and trouble hearing people speak over the phone are obvious red flags. If you need to pay closer attention before hearing what someone is saying or you need to increase the volume of a speaker before hearing audibly, then you may have started developing ear problems.

Note that hearing loss can be treated, but the hearing may not be restored. Thats where hearing aids and other types of procedures come in.

Does Medicare Cover the Cost of Hearing Aids?

The Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 may provide some help. Sponsored by Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Grassley , it allows individuals to buy certain types of hearing aids over the counter without prior approval from a health care provider. The Food and Drug Administration has until 2020 to propose new regulations for the law, and the devices likely wont be available to the public until 2021.

Will over-the-counter hearing aids actually help address the unmet need for these devices? That remains to be seen. It will depend on how much they cost and how good they are. They likely wont replace the prescription hearing aid market nor should they much like how drugstore reading glasses dont fully substitute for prescription lenses. Nevertheless, over-the-counter products serve an essential purpose: They provide immediate, low-cost relief to health problems that may not need more advanced treatment.

One concern with the over-the-counter approach is that some consumers may believe these hearing aids address their problems when they really should be seeking professional help.

Another approach that could make prescription hearing aids more accessible is through insurance coverage. The Seniors Have Eyes, Ears, and Teeth Act has been introduced in Congress for several years in an attempt to include hearing aids and, as the laws name suggests, vision and dental services, in Medicare coverage.

What Is The Cost Of Hearing Aids

The cost of hearing aids depends on several factors, such as the type of hearing loss someone has, the quality of materials use in the hearing aid and the kind of technology used in the device.

At the lower end of the market, economical hearing aids can cost around $1500-$3000 per hearing aid, whereas premium models using sophisticated technology could cost as much as $6000 each. If you need one for each ear, the price will be considerably more.

When you buy hearing aids, the cost usually includes a hearing test, consultation, and the initial fitting. Youll then return for follow-up appointments to adjust the hearing aids and customize them to your specific needs.

Its important to factor in other associated costs. Hearing aids require maintenance, such as routine cleaning and replacement batteries. You should also consider how you would cover loss or accidental damage.

What You Need To Know

  • Legislation has been introduced that would require health insurance providers to extend coverage for hearing aids to children.
  • Similar bills have been introduced in recent years in Tallahassee, but none have been approved.
  • Approximately 24 states around the nation have passed such legislation.

Roughly half the states in the country mandate health benefit plans to provide coverage for hearing aids for children.
