Some elderly individuals that have long-term care insurance may use the benefits from that insurance to pay their children to provide them with care. Each policy is different and some policies may expressly prohibit family members from being compensated. However, such rules are relatively rare. More common is the long-term care insurance policy that requires care providers to be licensed. Family caregivers are vital to helping seniors maintain their health and well-being in the community. As awareness and recognition of this important role increases, so too does the development and provision of supportive programs for aging Americans and their informal caregivers.

Veterans Directed Home And Community Based Services
This program is often abbreviated as VD-HCBS or referred to informally as Veterans Directed Care. The program is open to any veteran who is currently enrolled in the VA health care system whose care requirements are such that nursing home level care is required. Under Veterans Directed Care, veterans are able to select from whom they receive care services. Veterans with a certain level of care needs, require personal care or personal care attendants. This program gives veterans the option to hire whoever they choose, including family members, such as their adult children to provide them with personal care services.
Adult children caregivers are paid an hourly rate. This rate is determined annually by Veterans Health Administration and modified for regional differences in home care costs. It is difficult to accurately project what caregivers will receive, as each veteran is assessed for a different amount of home care assistance. That said, caregivers might expect to be compensated between $8.44 $20.00 per hour for their efforts.

Medicare is a federal government health insurance coverage plan for seniors age 65 and older. Medicare wont pay for long-term care services such as in-home assistance or adult day services. That fact applies whether the services are being provided by a direct care worker or a family member.

One of the programs that can help out with family caregiving expenses is Community HealthChoices , also known as a Medicaid Waiver Health Plan.
CHC is a program for people age 21 and over who are eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare. The program requires individuals to need a certain level of assistance to qualify for the program.
In Pennsylvania, one of three private healthcare insurance companies administers managed care Medicaid. The state contracts with them to manage the CHC for program participants.

The Last Resort A Gofundme Campaign
Then theres the last resort method my friend Sharon used to find much-needed funds to care for Rose, her 95-year-old mother: GoFundMe.
Roses health had been deteriorating, and early this year, Sharon began taking care of her mom full-time instead of working. Sharon tried helping Rose apply for Medicaid, but her mother didnt qualify.
Desperate for financial assistance, Sharon decided to put up a GoFundMe crowdsourcing page. It included a photo of Rose with her beloved dog Sheba and explained Roses situation. To date, the effort has raised $1,300, which has let Sharon hire a respite caregiver for several hours a week.
A recent search on the GoFundMe site revealed several other similar COVID-related caregiving funding requests.
If youd like to find out whether you can get paid to be a family caregiver, Lisa Gurgone, executive director of Mass Home Care recommends contacting your local Area Agency on Aging/Aging Service Access Point. You can find your agency by entering your ZIP code into the federal governments online Eldercare Locator.
Once you find your local agency, Gurgone says, ask to speak with the Information and Referral Department about Medicaid and non-Medicaid programs letting family caregivers receive compensation or respite services.

The Purpose Of The Program And How It Works
Established in 2000, the NFCSP provides grants to states and territories, based on their share of the population age 70 and over, to fund a range of supports that assist family and informal caregivers to care for their loved ones at home for as long as possible.
NFCSP grantees provide five types of services:

information to caregivers about available services

assistance to caregivers in gaining access to the services

individual counseling, organization of support groups, and caregiver training

respite care and
-
supplemental services, on a limited basis
These services work in conjunction with other state and community-based services to provide a coordinated set of supports.
