Why Dental Care Is Important
Regular visits to the dentist are critical to your oral health. Routine visits help keep your teeth and gums healthy, and good oral health affects your overall health. Oral health issues, such as cavities and gum disease, can lead to more serious health issues, such as diabetes, respiratory problems and many others.
Oral health is important in all stages of life. Children, adults and seniors require proper dental care and should visit the dentist regularly. While it is recommended that we visit the dentist twice per year, many Canadians do not go as frequently as they should, often because they do not have adequate dental insurance.
Using Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Providers
The Blue Cross Blue Shield dental providers that are accessible to you may depend on the type of Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in which you are enrolled.
- An HMO plan will typically restrict you to seeing the dental providers that participate in the plan. If you visit a dental provider who is not part of your plan, you are unlikely to receive any coverage.
- A PPO plan can give you a little more freedom to visit dental providers outside of the plans network. You will maximize your savings by staying inside the network, but you may still have some of your care covered if received outside of the network.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Coverage

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage is available through either a standalone dental plan that may be added to a health insurance plan or through a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part C, covers the same benefits as Original Medicare while typically also offering some additional coverage for things not included under Original Medicare. Dental care, along with vision care and prescription drug coverage, is among the most common extra benefits found in Medicare Advantage plans.
Blue Cross Blue Shield dental coverage may vary by plan, but common benefits include:
- Exams
- Orthodontics
- Oral surgery
Preventive dental care is often covered in full. Some plans may offer a yearly allowance to put toward preventive care or other dental services.
Standalone dental plans may be a good option for those who have a health insurance plan that does not include any dental coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are popular among Medicare beneficiaries, as Original Medicare does not cover routine dental services and only offers very limited dental coverage at all.

Business Wire Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Kentucky And Dentaquest Have Expanded Their Scope Of Services To Offer Anthems Kentucky Medicaid Members Access To A Broad Network Of Dentaquest Oral Health Providers And Services These Services Are Availabl
Many of Anthems Medicaid members in Kentucky have not previously had access to dental services or may have not been aware that they can access oral health benefits at no cost, said Cecelia Manlove, president of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Kentucky Medicaid. This can result in gaps in care, deteriorating oral health and the risk of future health complications, so we want our members to take control of their health by accessing the benefits offered through DentaQuest. Also, if our members need help finding a provider or understanding what services are available, we are committed to connecting them with qualified experts who can help them maintain and improve their oral health.
Children should start seeing a dentist when they get their first tooth, before their first birthday, and both children and adults should see a dentist every six months, said Rebekah Mathews, DentaQuest regional director of client engagement in Kentucky. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in Kentucky, and children with dental problems typically grow up to become adults with dental problems. As we grow older, dental issues can lead to more severe health issues, so it is important to start practicing preventive health as soon as possible and working toward a healthier future.

Dental emergencies
When you have a toothache or other dental problem, your first thought is to get it fixed and fast. Fast treatment means the emergency room, right? Not when it comes to problems with your teeth or mouth. The emergency room can handle just about anything, but for mouth-related issues, your dentist is the better option. Dentists have the specialized equipment and training to figure out whats wrong and how to fix it.
To avoid a dental emergency:
- Visit your dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups.
- Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day.
- Floss daily.
- Dont use tobacco and avoid heavy drinking.
- Eat a healthy diet.
- Wear mouth guards when playing sports.
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

Why Do Some People Get Dental Implants

Implants have some advantages over non-implanted dentures, such as more stability in the mouth, stronger chewing, and improved speech and appearance.
Good candidates for dental implants include those in good overall health, non-smokers, healthy gums with strong jaw bones, and a commitment to proper oral hygiene and future dental visits.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of ceramic or metal that take the place of your natural roots in the upper and lower jaw bones. A bridge or denture is then attached the implant.
Dental implants can cost anywhere between $1,500 and $6,000 per tooth depending on several variables.
