Spotlight On Mental Health Services

Mental health services also drew bipartisan attention Wednesday, with a half dozen lawmakers asking about capacity in community-based services, the states emergency response program and its progress on the 988 suicide hotline. The new three-digit crisis line will roll out nationally in mid-July, with links to local call centers and mental health responders. Suicide attempts and mental health needs in general have been exacerbated by the pandemic.

New Jersey is ahead of the curve when it comes to implementing the 988 call line, Adelman said. In addition to the rate increase for behavioral health providers, she said the department has committed $10 million to expand early intervention mental-health services to 11 more counties, so that residents in all 21 will have access. The program can involve psychiatric assessments, medication, short-term counseling or psychiatric visits, referrals and case management.

This is going to be huge in meeting mental health needs at the community level and outside the emergency room, Adelman said. The budget also includes $1.2 million more to ensure that residents who dont qualify for Medicaid have access to inpatient psychiatric care, officials said.
