Would These Abortions Go Away Without Medicaid Funding
Some would, though some would be paid for privately. When Medicaid does not cover abortions, studies have found that the number of abortions drops by about one-third. Those pregnancies are carried to term, and the child is left alive. Decades of other research on the issue have had similar findings. According to these studies, about a third of Medicaid-funded abortions dont happen if they have to be paid for privately.
In addition, without Medicaid funding, unwanted births decrease as well. Research has shown that when abortion is more difficult to access financially, people take greater care to avoid pregnancy. In fact, the effect is so significant that some studies have found that the number of births actually decreases along with drops in abortions.
How Does Maryland Regulate Long
Medicare beneficiaries increasingly rely on long-term care, and the portion of seniors needing these services will keep rising as the population ages. However, long-term care is mostly not covered by Medicare. While Medicaid fills the gap in Medicare coverage for long-term care, its complex eligibility rules can make qualifying for benefits difficult. Whats more eligibility rules vary significantly from state to state.
Medicaid nursing home coverage
Income limits: The applicants income cannot be higher than the cost of nursing home care. However, this doesnt mean nursing home enrollees can keep all of their income up to the cost of care. Enrollees must pay nearly all their income each month to their nursing home, other than a small personal needs allowance and money to pay for health insurance premiums .
Assets limits: The asset limit is $2,000 if single and $3,000 if married . If only one spouse needs Medicaid, the other spouse can keep up to $128,640.
Certain assets are never counted, including many household effects, family heirlooms, certain prepaid burial arrangements, and one car.
In Maryland, nursing home enrollees cant have more than $595,000 in home equity.
Home and Community Based Services waivers
All state Medicaid programs cover community-based long-term care, which is provided at home or in a community setting. Programs that pay for this care are called Home and Community Based Services waivers because enrollees dont have to enter a nursing home.

Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, so stand-alone Part D plans are typically used to supplement Original Medicare. Enrollment in Original Medicare in Maryland is higher than average, which is why stand-alone Medicare Part D enrollment in Maryland is also higher than average. In addition to the people with stand-alone Part D coverage, 156,628 Medicare beneficiaries in Maryland have Part D coverage as part of their Medicare Advantage coverage.

Which States Have No Adult Dental Coverage
Only a small number of states have no dental coverage whatsoever. If you live in the following states and need dental care, you will have to do so outside of Medicaid benefits.
States with no adult dental benefits:

Resources For Those Without Dental Coverage
However, there are still ways to get affordable dental care without Medicaid. Here are some options that may be available to you:
- If you are 65 or older and are enrolled in a Medicare Part C program, there is a good chance that you have dental coverage through this program. Talk to a program coordinator and find out if you are covered.
- Find the nearest dental school. Every state has a university that includes a dental program. This is one of the most competitive programs to get into, so even a student dentist will be very capable of your care.
- Get in touch with your local 211. The specialists on the other end will be able to direct you to dental clinics that offer affordable care.
- If you are 65 and over, disabled, or otherwise medically vulnerable, you can apply for free dental care through Dental Lifeline. This is a service that dentists and dental professionals provide donated dental care. Dental Lifeline operates in every state.

Unitedhealthcare Senior Care Options Plan
UnitedHealthcare SCO is a Coordinated Care plan with a Medicare contract and a contract with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Medicaid program. Enrollment in the plan depends on the plans contract renewal with Medicare. This plan is a voluntary program that is available to anyone 65 and older who qualifies for MassHealth Standard and Original Medicare. How States Were Violating Medicaid Law
The U.S. Government Accountability Office is the non-partisan research arm of Congress. The GAO is important because it supports Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and because it helps to improve the performance and accountability of the federal government. It is therefore noteworthy that the GAO concluded that various states were not complying with Medicaid law and policy by limiting access to abortion coverage.
The report cited multiple violations of federal policy. One state, South Dakota, does not cover abortions in cases of rape or incest, forcing survivors to carry these pregnancies to term. This is nothing new. We knew that South Dakota has been legally and morally liable for at least 26 years. In fact, a South Dakota statute clearly establishes that coverage is only provided to those whose lives are in danger. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent two letters to South Dakotaone in 1994 and another one in 1998asking South Dakota to cover abortions under the rape and incest circumstances. In 2014, NHeLP and other advocates reminded CMS of its duty to issue updated guidance reiterating states obligation to cover abortion in all the Hyde Amendment exceptions. No such guidance has been issued.

Medicare Advantage In Maryland
Nationwide, about a third of all Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in private Medicare Advantage plans as of 2018. But in Maryland, just 11% of Medicare beneficiaries selected Medicare Advantage plans. Most of the rest were covered under Original Medicare, but there are also some Maryland Medicare beneficiaries with Medicare Cost plan coverage.
By late 2021, almost 17% of people with Medicare in Maryland were enrolled in private plans , while the other 83% were enrolled in Original Medicare. At that point, total private plan enrollment among Medicare beneficiaries nationwide had grown to almost 44%, but Medicare Advantage enrollment continues to be less popular in Maryland.
The availability of Medicare Advantage plans in Maryland varies from one county to another. In St. Marys County, there are only four Medicare Advantage plans available in 2022. But in Baltimore County and Montgomery County, there are 33 plans available.
Medicare beneficiaries can switch back and forth from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare or vice versa each fall during the annual open enrollment period . There is also a Medicare Advantage open enrollment period during which people who are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans can change to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop their Medicare Advantage plan and enroll in Original Medicare instead.
