We start on the West Coast, where clean up efforts in British Columbia are on hold as the province waits for the arrival of more heavy rain. As CTV reports, the British Columbia government extended a state of emergency on Monday, which includes rations on fuel purchases. Meanwhile, farmers in the region tell Global News, it will take years for their businesses to recover from the natural disaster.

Supply chain pinches continue to be felt in other parts of the country as a result of the B.C. floods. As CBC News reports, the looming rainfall forced Canadian National Railway to proactively shut its service in southern B.C. because the wet weather was causing increased debris, washouts and landslides. Exporters say access to the Port of Vancouver remains a challenge.

We hope that this gets back to normal as soon as possible, but its going to take weeks at least, months probably, Dennis Darby, president of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters told CBC News.

All Kids Orthodontic/braces Coverage Details

Medicaid is a form of government-funded health care coverage available to low-income families and individuals residing in Illinois. Illinois has two Medicaid programs specifically for children, All Kids and Family Care.

Each of these programs includes dental care for kids and might assists in paying for orthodontic treatment . The dental program is administered by DentaQuest of Illinois.

Are All The Costs Of Getting Braces Covered

Medicaid Rewards: Kentuckys Devolution On Healthcare | AM Joy | MSNBC

The answer is yes! Medicaid will cover the consultations and the cost of the braces themselves. In fact, it is a general rule that kids must get at least the following under Medicaid:

  • Dental health maintenance, including cleanings and checkups
  • Teeth restorations
  • Pain and infection relief

However, there is one catch. In Louisiana for example, Medicaid will only cover the minimum necessary to alleviate the medical issue.

The takeaway from this is that you cant go for the more expensive options when it comes to braces. For example, Medicaid will not cover ceramic braces or the increasingly popular Invisalign option, which can cost up to $10,000!

You can only choose the basic metal braces

    Dental Specialists Taking Medicaid

{#95}: GETTING MY BRACES OFF PREPARATION & RETAINERS ...

Specialists have additional training beyond dental school, making them more proficient when diagnosing and treating specific oral health problems. Your ability to find a specialist near you that accepts Medicaid for adults hinges on the dual nature of the public program.

  • Medicaid acts as health insurance countrywide and pays for medically necessary oral care: arising from non-biting accidents, certain diseases, and treatments considered integral to other services included in the plan
  • Medical assistance operates as dental insurance for adults with different oral care benefits available to adults over 21 in each state

If you have private dental insurance and/or supplemental orthodontic insurance, you can use this to cover at least a portion of the costs for your child’s braces treatment. This may allow your child to get braces with reduced out-of-pocket expenses and can lower the cost of the treatment.

Each insurance plan has its own eligibility requirements and amounts covered: be sure to check maximum lifetime benefits and the types of treatment covered by your plan, and find an orthodontic provider that takes your insurance.

    Free Braces Through Medicaid

Getting free braces with Medicaid will prove tricky because the federal government rules permit copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and other similar charges on most covered benefits. However, the public program might pay for a substantial percentage of expenses for specific groups.

Medicaid coverage for orthodontia is a complex topic that can boil down to two critical qualifying reasons.

  • Adult and Children: medically necessary treatment that prevents, diagnoses, or treats an injury, disease, or symptoms
  • Kids under age 18: handicapping malocclusion based on a point system used to index the need for treatment

Dental Benefits For Children In Medicaid

Medicaid covers dental services for all child enrollees as part of a comprehensive set of benefits, referred to as the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment benefit. Though oral screening may be part of a physical exam, it does not substitute for a dental examination performed by a dentist. A referral to a dentist is required for every child in accordance with the periodicity schedule set by a state.

Dental services for children must minimally include:

    • Relief of pain and infections
    • Restoration of teeth
    • Maintenance of dental health

The EPSDT benefit requires that all services must be provided if determined medically necessary. States determine medical necessity. If a condition requiring treatment is discovered during a screening, the state must provide the necessary services to treat that condition, whether or not such services are included in a state’s Medicaid plan.

Each state is required to develop a dental periodicity schedule in consultation with recognized dental organizations involved in child health care. Dental services may not be limited to emergency services for children entitled to EPSDT.

Dental Benefits For Children In Chip

Price claims Medicaid cuts won’t hurt coverage

States that provide CHIP coverage to children through a Medicaid expansion program are required to provide the EPSDT benefit. Dental coverage in separate CHIP programs is required to include coverage for dental services “necessary to prevent disease and promote oral health, restore oral structures to health and function, and treat emergency conditions.”

States with a program may choose from two options for providing dental coverage: a package of dental benefits that meets the CHIP requirements, or a benchmark dental benefit package. The benchmark dental package must be substantially equal to the the most popular federal employee dental plan for dependents, the most popular plan selected for dependents in the state’s employee dental plan, or dental coverage offered through the most popular commercial insurer in the state.

States are also required to post a listing of all participating Medicaid and CHIP dental providers and benefit packages on InsureKidsNow.gov.

What Criteria Must You Meet Before Medicaid Will Cover Braces

So does Medicaid cover braces? Firstly, Medicaid will only cover braces for children. That definition sounds a bit vague, and yes, there is a specific age limit written in law.

In most states , the age where Medicaid will definitely cover braces is age 21 and under.

Secondly, Medicaid will only cover the cost of braces if the patient can prove that they have handicapping malocclusion

Handi-malo-what, you say? Handicapping Malocclusion refers to conditions that could cause a danger to the patients oral health. The patient would have to prove that it affects their wellbeing. Or that it will interfere with their talking, eating or swallowing.

Note that you dont have to be experiencing problems right now. Youd qualify for coverage by Medicaid if you can prove that youd eventually develop problems if you leave your condition untreated.

On the flip side, this means that you will not be covered if your reasons for getting braces are purely cosmetic. Yes, a couple of teeth jutting out of your mouth is not pleasant to look at. But that still doesnt qualify you for brace coverage by Medicaid!

So youre hearing a lot about proving that youll face future health concerns. How do you do that? And what steps do you need to take to apply for coverage?

Do I Need A Referral To See A Provider Other Than My Pcp

Yes. Most services from another provider require a referral from your PCP. You should get a referral before receiving the service. This is true even if it is a specialist, hospital service , or acute/urgent care visit. View the recipient handbook for a complete list of services that require a referral and services that do not. A referral can be made by your PCP via a telephone referral, physician order, prescription, referral card, or certificate of medical necessity.

    Taking Care Of Your Teeth

A common complication of orthodontics is white spots on the teeth, which are an early sign of tooth decay. This can happen when acid is produced from plaque, which builds up on your teeth and around your brace.

Cleaning your teeth and brace can be time-consuming, but it’s needed to avoid permanent marks on your teeth when the brace is removed.

Many people with appliances find it difficult to keep their teeth and gums clean, so extra brushing is needed during treatment.

Your orthodontist may recommend using toothpaste with a high level of fluoride, or a mouthwash that contains fluoride, to reduce your risk of tooth decay. You should also try to avoid sugary foods and fizzy drinks.
