Community Dental Clinic Loses Dentist

The Community Dental Clinic announced recently the resignation of Dr. Brandon Taylor, who has been with the clinic for a decade.

Taylor began his work with the dental clinic around 10 years ago and has served more than 15,000 patients in that time.

According to board chairwoman Suzanne Craig, Taylors reason for resigning was not stated, but that the clinic wishes him well.

The board of directors of the Community Dental Clinic would like to thank Dr. Taylor for his service to the clinic, as well for his dedication to the community. We wish him the best in his future endeavors, the announcement stated.

The clinic, 2811 New Hartford Road, opened in Owensboro in 2009 with a mission to serve individuals who were on Medicaid or without dental insurance, according to Craig.

There was no other clinic like it in Kentucky thats sole purpose was to serve those with Medicaid, she said. We found that people ended up going to the emergency room for dental pain and they really had nowhere to go.

My Child Still Has Baby Teeth Should I Wait For All The Baby Teeth To Come Out Before Going To The Orthodontist

No. Some orthodontic problems are best treated during the active growth phase that takes place between the ages of 7-10. With some patients, early treatment achieves results that are unattainable once the face and jaws have finished growing. Bringing your child in by age 7 allows the orthodontic specialist to determine his or her optimum treatment time.

When Should I Take My Child For An Evaluation By An Orthodontist

The childs first visit to an orthodontist should take place as soon as an orthodontic problem is detected. If your dentist hasnt already recommended an orthodontic examination, every child should be seen by an orthodontist no later than age 7. Although no treatment may be needed at this age, an examination is important to ensure maximum dental health for your child. Early warning signs that may indicatean orthodontic problem are: crowded teeth, early or late loss of teeth, thumb or finger sucking, protruding teeth, facial imbalance, and biting the cheek or into the roof of the mouth.

Most Common Dental Emergencies

1. Tooth Injury

Any trauma to a tooth or the entire jaw classifies as a tooth injury. An injury may cause the tooth to be loosened up or even become removed from its normal position. Immediately seek help from your routine local dentist if this happens to you or contact Emergency Dental Service to find a dentist 24 hours a day. Our emergency dentist will treat your tooth injury within 24 hours to restore the tooth or teeth to the normal state of the tooth before the injury. Most dentists will recommend that you dont try to fix it on your own in order to avoid further damage.

2. Severe Toothache

Toothaches that are unbearable should not be ignored. They usually signal serious problems like infection or decay. Depending on the toothache, rinsing with either cold or warm water can temporarily help. Over the counter painkillers are recommended until you can schedule an appointment with an emergency dentist listed on the Emergency Dental Service website.

3. Knocked-out tooth

4. Impaired braces

If a wire in your braces has broken or come loose, it may poke and scrape your gums, cheeks or tongue. This calls for seeking emergency dental services with a dentist near you. As a temporary measure, you can try covering the wire end with a piece of gauze or a small cotton ball. Once you stop the wire from causing any further damage, schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible.

Local Hearing Held On Kentucky Medicaid Plan

Great Health Divide | Bridging the dental care gap

Tina Jackson, a retired social worker from Lawrence County, speaks yesterday at The Center for Rural Development.

Somerset hosted the first of two public hearings on Friday aimed at gathering comment on Kentuckys proposed Medicaid changes.

Just a few dozen people were scattered throughout the Center for Rural Developments auditorium for the event held by the Kentucky Department for Medicaid Services. A second hearing is scheduled for Monday in Frankfort, though comments may be mailed or sent electronically through August 2.

Under the Medicaid expansion allowed through the federal Affordable Care Act , 400,000 Kentuckians gained coverage helping the uninsured rate fall from 20 percent to 7.5 percent in just two years.

But current Governor Matt Bevin has argued that the ACA has been an unmitigated disaster for Kentucky because of higher premiums and increased costs for taxpayers. He asked the federal government last year for permission to overhaul the commonwealths program and released his updated proposal on July 3.

State officials estimate the changes would increase taxpayer savings to $358 million by 2021. But it means a total of 95,000 people would likely lose their Medicaid coverage.

I want you to know that we look forward to your comments today, Glisson said, and all comments will be taken into consideration as we continue to refine the waiver that we are preparing for our state.

Several commenters have battled their own health crises.

By Ian Urbina

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. In the 18 years he has been visiting nursing homes, seeing patients in his private practice and, more recently, driving his mobile dental clinic through Appalachian hills and hollows, Dr. Edwin E. Smith has seen the extremes of neglect.

He has seen the shame of a 14-year-old girl who would not lift her head because she had lost most of her teeth from malnutrition, and the do-it-yourself pride of an elderly mountain man who, unable to afford a dentist, pulled his own infected teeth with a pair of pliers.

He has seen the brutal result of angry husbands hitting their wives and the end game of pill-poppers who crack healthy teeth, one by one, to get dentists to prescribe pain medications.

But mostly he has seen everyday people who are too busy putting food on the table to worry about oral hygiene. Many of them savor their sweets, drink well water without fluoride and long ago started ruining their teeth by chewing tobacco and smoking.

Dr. Smith has a rare window on a state with the highest proportion of adults under 65 without teeth, where about half the population does not have dental insurance. He struggles to counter the effects of the drastic shortage of dentists in rural areas and oral hygiene habits that have been slow to change.
