New Feature Allows Recipients To Search For Enrolled Providers

Finding a doctor or dentist who accepts Medicaid and practices in their area used to be a chore for Medicaid recipients, as well as their primary care physicians. Now, that information can be found via a quick computer search.

The Medicaid programs Web site, www.medicaid.dhh.louisiana.gov, now features a Provider Locator Map that allows users to search for Medicaid providers by parish or region. Users can pick what sort of service they need and be given a list of all providers for that service in their area who are enrolled in Medicaid.

We often hear complaints from our Medicaid recipients or their primary care physicians that they have trouble finding a provider for a specialized service who accepts Medicaid, said LDH Secretary Dr. Fred Cerise. With this new search tool, it will be easier and faster for recipients to locate a provider in their area, and it will be easier for their primary care doctors to refer them to another provider.

To access this feature, users should go to the site and click on the magnifying glass that says Find a doctor or dentist in Medicaid. They will then be directed to the map, which will allow them to select a service from a drop-down menu and click on either their region or their parish to search. The map gives users the name, address and phone number of all providers that fit their search criteria. If no active provider is listed in a users parish for service, they are advised to check the surrounding parishes or the entire region.

Pediatric Vs General Dentist

The most prominent difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist is that the former receives two extra years of extensive training at dental school. During these two years, pediatric specialists learn how to manage and care for the youngest of patients. However, the expertise of a pediatric dentist are only needed in cases of complex surgeries, special needs patients, and other specialized areas of concern.

In most cases, children can be taken to general dentists for their routine check-ups, cleaning and treatments aimed at restoring natural teeth. It is a fact that majority of the pediatric dentists in the country do not accept Medicaid, which is why when a problem arises, you should promptly take your child to see a general dentist who will be able to treat your child just the same.

Offering Supports Beyond The Office

With fewer office visits, the pediatric practices have been working to offer additional support to families during the pandemic.

Bui and a medical student came up with the idea of having third- and fourth-year medical students reach out to families to check on their mental health and connect them with providers or other sources of support. Through the Pediatric Mental Health Calls program, volunteer medical students reached out to high-risk groups: teenagers who may be struggling and new mothers who may be experiencing postpartum depression. After Bui heard reports from local EDs about a spike in child abuse cases, they began calling families with toddlers, a group that accounts for a disproportionate share of child abuse cases. Following a script that involves taking psychosocial histories and screening for problems, medical students made more than 3,500 calls from March to November 2020. One of five families asked for some type of support for issues ranging from maternal depression to food insecurity. Nearly one of five teens asked to schedule a mental health visit with a provider.

How Do I Find The Best Medicaid Pediatricians

AxessPointe Family Doctors Near Me that Accept Medicaid

Many people know that finding medical professionals who take Medicaid can be a difficult process. Though some doctors are happy to serve people with this form of US government insurance, others determine that the low compensation offered with Medicaid or the problems in getting compensation in a timely fashion can make sustaining a practice at a profitable level very difficult. It is therefore challenging to find the best Medicaid pediatricians, because there may not be many choices available. This does depend much on where people live those in more populous areas will have a greater selection of doctors who take Medicaid.

Access to the Internet can help in locating pediatricians who take Medicaid by searching on the US Health and Human Services Department website by geographical area, while limiting the search to pediatricians only. There are two classes of pediatricians listed: participants and non-participants. Participant pediatricians will usually take new patients with Medicaid with very little trouble, while non-participants can accept or deny services to any patient with Medicaid on a case-by-case basis.
