Utilization Of Fertility Services

Our analysis of the 2015-2017 National Survey of Family Growth finds that 10% of women2 ages 18-49 say they or their partner have ever talked to a doctor about ways to help them become pregnant .3 Among women ages 18-49, the most commonly reported service is fertility advice .

Figure 2: Women and Their Partners Seek Various Fertility Services to Help Become Pregnant

The CDC finds that use of IVF has steadily increased since its first successful birth in 1981. According to the most recent data, an estimated 1.8% of U.S. infants are conceived annually using assisted reproductive technology .4 The proportions are highest in the Northeast , and lower in the South and Southwest .

Utilization of fertility services has dropped drastically during the COVID-19 public health emergency. On March 17, 2020 the American Society for Reproductive Medicine issued guidelines to stop all new fertility treatment cycles and non-urgent diagnostic procedures. Since then, ASRM has provided updated guidance on what conditions should be met and measures should be taken before safely resuming fertility care. During this time, a study by Strata Decision Technology of 228 hospitals across 40 states found patient encounters for infertility services were down 83% from March 22 to April 4, 2020 compared to this time the year prior.

    A Closer Look At Endocrinologists

Endocrinologists are medical doctors who have been trained to diagnose and treat hormonal diseases and disorders. Treatment of endocrine problems are geared at helping patients restore a normal balance of hormones in the body to reverse disease and complications resulting from hormone imbalances. Endocrinologists focus not only on hormones, but also on the many glands and tissues throughout the body that are responsible for producing hormones. There are over 50 different hormones in the body that have a significant impact on all aspects of physical functioning and development of the human body.

Common diseases that endocrinologists treat include:

    Reproductive disorders

The endocrine system regulates physical functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, respiration, sensory perception, and even movement. Hormonal imbalances underlie a number of common medical conditions. The endocrine system impacts all other systems within the human body through the secretion of substances from the adrenal and suprarenal glands, the hypothalamus, ovaries, and testes.

Endocrinologists work with metabolic, reproductive, and developmental disorders, but they can also help patients overcome certain psychological and behavioral issues related to sleep, respiration, stress, digestion, and more. Many endocrinologists specialize in working with a certain subset of disorders within their field. Below are 10 of the best endocrinologists in the NYC area who accept Medicaid.

    Diagnosis And Treatment Services

Infertility is most commonly defined1 as the inability to achieve pregnancy after 1 year of regular, unprotected heterosexual intercourse, and affects an estimated 10-15% of heterosexual couples. Both female and male factors contribute to infertility, including problems with ovulation , structural problems with the uterus or fallopian tubes, problems with sperm quality or motility, and hormonal factors . About 25% of the time, infertility is caused by more than one factor, and in about 10% of cases infertility is unexplained. Infertility estimates, however do not account for LGBTQ or single individuals who may also need fertility assistance for family building. Therefore, there are varied reasons that may prompt individuals to seek fertility care.
