The referral database is a project of the Bexar County Medical Society and the Patient Institute, a nonprofit organization that helps patients and their caregivers navigate the health care system.

The Medical Society has had an online database to search for physicians by name, ZIP code and specialty. Now, users are able to check whether doctors are accepting new Medicare, Medicaid, commercially insured or cash-paying patients.

That part is critical, because there are a lot of physicians in town who are not taking new patients at all, said Dr. Adam Ratner, a radiologist who is chairman of the Patient Institute. With this database, it actually will make it easier for patients to get connected with physicians.

The database can be accessed on the websites of the Medical Society and the Patient Institute. Both also will accept phone calls from patients in search of a doctor.
