Chronic Pain Management Therapies In Medicaid: Policy Considerations For Non
Although most Medicaid agencies cover services that can be used as alternatives to opioids for pain management, significantly fewer states have policies or procedures in place to encourage their use. Between March and June 2016, the National Academy for State Health Policy conducted a survey of all 51 Medicaid agencies to determine the extent to which states have implemented specific programs or policies to encourage or require non-opioid therapies for acute or chronic non-cancer pain. We contacted each Medicaid Director via email. In cases of non-response, we followed up with Medicaid Medical Directors. Ultimately, we received responses from 41 states and the District of Columbia.

Prepare For Your Appointment
To prepare for your first appointment with pain management doctors, it may help to keep a pain journal to track how you feel throughout the day. Whenever you experience any discomfort, write an entry about what you were doing at the onset, how often it occurs, things that relieved the pain, and what the pain rating was on a scale of 1 to 10. This can help you communicate with your physician more effectively and help them get a better understanding of the pain that youre experiencing.

What Is Chronic Pain
Everyone knows what pain is, but in conventional medicine, there are two basic categories for pain that patients need to understand: acute and chronic pain. Acute pain may be mild or severe but it only lasts a short period of time. Pain that lasts only a moment or that is anticipated to resolve within a few weeks or a few months would be considered âacuteâ pain. Acute pain usually resolves and changes over time, giving patients a sense of control over the unpleasantness. But chronic pain is different, so it impacts patientsâ quality of life in a more pronounced way.
In contrast, chronic pain may be either mild or severe, but it is ongoing. Chronic pain lasts longer than 6 months which means that the patient must learn to cope with it daily over the course of a long period of time. As such, chronic pain can have a debilitating impact on patientsâ lives if it canât be managed. Treatments are geared at relieving enough of the pain that patients can be comfortable. Examples of common chronic pain issues include:
â Back pain
â Nerve pain
Chronic pain can cause physical effects on the body that further intensify the negative experience associated with the pain including muscle tension, impaired mobility, lack of energy, and changes in appetite and digestion. Many individuals who suffer from chronic pain also experience depression, anxiety, anger, and fear of re-injury.
