You probably know that hospitals have to take anyone who is indigent or has Medicaid but did you know that poor, homeless or indigent people cant get free dental care. Most if not all dentists dont accept Medicaid or provide free services for dental care.
The only free dental care in Salt Lake County as far as I know is at the 4th Street Clinic downtown. The only catch is that there is evidently only one dentist available and it sometimes takes months to get an appointment.
Does anyone think that our Legislature or Congressmen care about that? Thats a real indictment of our health care system and it shows how much they care for the less fortunate among us. They enjoy free health care and dental insurance. Dental care is a necessity for all. Why is it not provided?

When the Utah legislature cut dental care from its Medicaid plan earlier this year, Gov. Jon Huntsman asked the public to make donations. They delivered, raising the $2 million needed to restore the benefit. But critics say it’s the role of government, not philanthropists, to pay for essential services.

Utah, like other states, is reeling from federal cutbacks to Medicaid, the government’s health insurance for the poor. This spring, Utah’s blind, elderly and disabled got a shock when they learned they were losing one of the program’s optional services: dental coverage. The state found a creative solution, but critics say it’s a dangerous fix.
Jenny Brundin reports for member station KUER in Salt Lake City.

Joy Mayland takes out her top dentures and washes them with a toothbrush, as she does every morning and night.
Ms. JOY MAYLAND: That’s more teeth than I’ve seen in a long time.
BRUNDIN: For years, Mayland suffered severe ear, nose and throat infections and migraines. Finally, a doctor told her abscess teeth were the cause. She quickly had her top teeth replaced and is now nearly pain free. Mayland was preparing to treat four of her bottom teeth when she learned that the Utah legislature was dropping dental care July 1st.
Ms. MAYLAND: My God, I am terrified. I just have a great fear that should I have to have, you know, all of these things done, it won’t be available to me.

Latino focus groups.
Latino participants in 2 of the 3 focus groups cited language problems as a major obstacle to getting dental health care for their children. Specifically, they expressed concern about not being able to speak to someone who speaks their language, both on the telephone and in person. Latino participants in one focus group felt that racial discrimination played a role in their inability to receive timely and quality care. Frustrated with a particular dentist, a Latino participant said, âWhy do they work like this? If they don’t work with Medicaid or if they don’t want Latinos, they should put a sign on the doorââNo Hispanic people.’ â
African American focus groups.
American Indian focus groups.
Racial problems also were mentioned by 2 of the 3 American Indian groups. Several participants felt that they were treated differently because they were American Indian. However, the racial problems described here did not appear as formidable as those described by African American focus groups.
White focus group.
There were no reports of ethnic or racial problems affecting families in the White group.
