What’s Covered By Insurance Or Medicaid

One reality faced by expectant parents is that private insurance and public Medicaid coverage often dictate care options.

If you are privately insured, you will have more choice if you start early before you are pregnant researching which plans and providers are connected to which hospitals. Once you are pregnant, you still can determine your options by reviewing providers and services covered by your insurance network, information typically available on insurance company’s websites.

Public coverage through Medicaid presents unique challenges, said Sarah Benatar, a senior research assistant in the health policy center at the Urban Institute.

Some women arent going to have a choice they will have certain conditions that will require them to deliver at a certain place and have a certain doctor, Benatar said.

Medicaid is managed at the state level, and programs vary from state to state, but each state agency should maintain its own list of approved providers, which typically also is posted on their websites.

Many women become eligible for Medicaid for the first time during pregnancy.

“Medicaid pays for almost half of births in the country,” said Usha Ranji, associate director for womens health policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation. That’s in part because “pregnancy-related care has been covered for decades under Medicaid in all states. Eligibility varies, but for pregnant women it’s always been higher than for parents.”

What Makes A Good Hospital

CenterPlace Health

The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health , an initiative run by the nations leading medical societies whose members care for pregnant women, said every birthing hospital should be taking certain actions to improve maternal safety in the U.S.

AIM has recommended safety protocols that hospitals can follow on a voluntary basis. Experts say if a hospital is following AIM’s safety bundles which include requirements like calls to physicians and treatment if patients’ blood pressure exceeds 160 it indicates they are more focused on safety across the board.

Levy suggests calling the labor and delivery department of a hospital and asking for the charge nurse, who should be able to answer questions about the hospital’s safety practices.

People on labor and delivery will know if they are using AIM safety bundles and doing drills and all those things, Levy said.

Other questions patients can ask:

  • What happens if I start to hemorrhage? How do you measure blood loss?
  • Hemorrhage is one of the main culprits in maternal injury and death. AIM protocols call for all maternity care units to have hemorrhage carts with supplies, checklists and instructions, as well as response plans that include who to call if help is needed.
  • AIM protocols also require formal, qualitative measurements like weighing dressings.
  • What happens if I have high blood pressure?
  • Do you track and review complications?

New Feature Allows Recipients To Search For Enrolled Providers

Finding a doctor or dentist who accepts Medicaid and practices in their area used to be a chore for Medicaid recipients, as well as their primary care physicians. Now, that information can be found via a quick computer search.

The Medicaid programs Web site, www.medicaid.dhh.louisiana.gov, now features a Provider Locator Map that allows users to search for Medicaid providers by parish or region. Users can pick what sort of service they need and be given a list of all providers for that service in their area who are enrolled in Medicaid.

We often hear complaints from our Medicaid recipients or their primary care physicians that they have trouble finding a provider for a specialized service who accepts Medicaid, said LDH Secretary Dr. Fred Cerise. With this new search tool, it will be easier and faster for recipients to locate a provider in their area, and it will be easier for their primary care doctors to refer them to another provider.

To access this feature, users should go to the site and click on the magnifying glass that says “Find a doctor or dentist in Medicaid.” They will then be directed to the map, which will allow them to select a service from a drop-down menu and click on either their region or their parish to search. The map gives users the name, address and phone number of all providers that fit their search criteria. If no active provider is listed in a users parish for service, they are advised to check the surrounding parishes or the entire region.

Obstetricians , also called OB/GYNs, specialize in pregnancy and childbirth, as do Certified Nurse Midwives . Both are licensed by the states in which they practice, and you can verify that in most states through an online portal.

Most deliveries in the U.S. occur in hospitals. To practice at a particular hospital, Levy said doctors and midwives must apply for privileges to treat patients there.

For logistical reasons and many others, doctors dont typically have privileges at every single facility,” she said. “They tend to affiliate at one particular hospital.”

If patients are looking to receive care at a specific hospital, Levy and other experts suggest starting with a list of OB/GYNs or CNMs who have practicing privileges at that hospital, and narrowing down from there.
