Not receiving regular dental care makes kids very prone to infection from a cavity and they may lose a tooth or teeth said Dr. Leda Mugayar of the University of Florida College of Dentistry. “One, you have deep cavities in a childs mouth. Correcting the problem is more difficult because the pulp off the tooth is compromised and you are losing the vitality of the tooth.

Concerned by the growing number of children without access to dental care, in 2005 the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry joined other medical groups in a lawsuit against the state. The suit, filed in Federal Court in Miami, sought to change the reimbursement rate to doctors, reforms doctors say would attract more dentists to the system.

The state has spent more than $5 million defending itself in the suit which currently sits before the court.

Pediatric dentist asked for charges to be dropped

Working with children is of paramount importance to me, professionally and personally. As a pediatric dentist, there is nothing more gratifying that seeing a pediatric or special needs patient after extensive treatment happily return for follow-up visits with a healthy, happy smile.

I love having fun with my patients, making children laugh and feel comfortable throughout each dental experience. Providing continuity of care allows me to watch children grow and thrive. I love seeing each become excited about caring for his or her oral health and feel positive about seeing dental care providers.

Our team is made up of doctors and staff who are experienced and compassionate, and have created a friendly, family-like environment. We are united as a team we work hard to provide the best care possible, to ensure our patients and parents are heard and respected, and feel welcome and informed.

How To Find Local Dentists Accepting Medicaid For Adults

Finding a nearby dentist that accepts Medicaid for adults can be an enormous challenge or as easy as pie depending on where you live, the types of oral care needed, and other factors.

First, the health insurance element covers dental work across the country when medically necessary: connected to accidental injury or disease.

Second, the medical assistance is sometimes dental insurance, but the benefits vary widely in each state for oral care.

Third, you need to find providers in your area that take your specific plan rather than what others might have. Finally, state offices outsource administration to outside companies, adding a layer of confusing names and acronyms.

Federal Judge Rules That Florida Medicaid Program Violates Federal Law

    Forest City

Almost a decade after the original lawsuit was filed and three years after the trial was completed, U.S. District Court Judge Adalberto Jordan has ruled that the Florida Medicaid program violates federal law. The lawsuit was brought by the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. See the article below by Dr. Bicuspid as well as additional background on the case. Pediatric dentist and Medicaid dental expert Dr. James J. Crall was a critical expert witness in the case. The judges opinion relied heavily on Cralls analysis:

“I also agree with Dr. Cralls opinion that Floridas Medicaid dental rates are not sufficient enough to provide equal access . . . ”

“Based on the evidence in this case, I conclude that while reimbursement rates are not the only factor determining whether providers participate in Medicaid, they are by far the most important factor, and that a sufficient increase in reimbursement rates will lead to a substantial increase in provider participation and a corresponding increase in access to care.”

The AAPD applauds this court decision and hopes that policymakers will make reforms in Medicaid dental programs to improve patient utilization and provider participation, as has occurred in states like Connecticut, Maryland, and Texas . See this recent ADA Health Policy Institute Report for more details on how Medicaid dental fees are far below commercial insurance averages in most states.
